It’s sad to say that Miyako’s canon is kind of obscure. There is very little information on her personal background, and for a good reason; her obscure canon makes her personal background just as obscure. Details of her past revealed in the anime are small tidbits and the manga dedicates only about one whole page to her history

What we do know about Miyako is this; she lives in the Japanese city of Otowa that the show takes place in. Ever since she was young Miyako’s mother and father have disliked eachother. Miyako describes the situation as they “disappeared from eachother’s hearts”. Her house became silent and no member of the family talked to the others. Her parents neglected her and didn’t come home much. Miyako tried her hardest to get their attention through good grades, sports clubs, and cooking all of their favorite meals, but they never acknowledged her. Finally, when Miyako was around thirteen years old her parents divorced and her mother “walked away”. We don’t know what happened to her father.

We see her living in a huge house all by herself. It is not stated directly whether or not both of her parents physically left the house but it’s made clear that they don’t interact with their daughter. Miyako is free to stay out late and skip school as she pleases and often does. The period where she tried to impress her parents by joining sports clubs and acing in classes has ended. She is now known on campus for being a lazy class skipper and has a generally terrible reputation among those that actually attend class. By episode 4 of the ~memories~ anime, Miyako has befriended an aspiring secretlya!manga-ka named Hiro Hirono and has been obnoxiously spending time with him.

Personality:

Miyako Miyamura is an energetic bundle of issues. Around campus she is infamous for being a class skipping beauty with no interest in classes, visibly and actively ignoring her teachers. She acts on whims, gives up easily, and admits that she cannot take anything seriously.

But she hasn’t always been this way. Growing up, Miyako was the type of person who did her best at everything and overworked herself. She did well in all of her classes and joined sports clubs to show her atheletic skill. Back then her life revolved around doing well, but it was never for her own personal benefit. What drives Miyako more than anything else is praise and attention. She wants to be acknowledged for her accomplishments.

This is because Miyako is an incredibly lonely person. She grew up in a lonely environment and her attempts to be acknowledged were always ignored. No matter how good her grades were or how well she did in sports Miyako’s parents ignored her. So she eventually gave up. The incident of her parents ignoring her is what has turned hardworking Miyako in such a lazy and unmotivated person. As long as there is no one for her to impress then Miyako will make very little effort to be impressive.
However, if someone she thought she could harvest praise from were to come by then Miyako would begin trying hard again; at the end of her love story, when Hirono and her are a couple, Miyako begins attending class regularly again. She begins trying very hard because her boyfriend is willing to praise her accomplishments and acknowledge even her failures. So once she makes some friends she will become a motivated person again.

Buuut until then, Miyako is lazy. She constantly skips classes on silly whims; skipping because she’s “in a bad mood” or because she’d rather be enjoying the sunshine than sitting in a classroom. She even cuts class mid-day at various points, telling Kei she isn’t going to 6th period because she has lost interest and dragging Hirono out on a lunch date, proving that her thought process isn’t really affected by the fact she’s already at school.

Miyako’s thought process is noteably “special” as well. Many characters comment on how they just cannot understand her way of thinking. It’s not that she does really weird things, exactly, but that she has a very self-centered thought process. She says herself that she will do whatever she wants, whether others are willing or not. This includes forcing Hirono to skip classes by dragging him out and then forcefully taking him on a date, for example, or deciding to take order someone else’s food for them.
Miyako does these things to satisfy her own personal happiness and comes off as very selfish, but that is not entirely the case. She has shown herself to be very conscious of how others are feeling as well as being a very observant person. Her decision to drag Hirono on a date was motivated by her desire to help ease his stress, for example. She just never states that. Miyako acts in ways that she thinks will make others like her more and tends to get lost in the state of being happy, but once the happiness train is stopped for even just a moment she will quickly figure out what her company is thinking and act accordingly. During one date, Miyako realizes that she was probably the only one having fun and simply ditches Hirono to get out of his hair. Her efforts to cheer him up weren’t helping so she just gave up.

Giving up is another key part of her personality. Miyako gives up a frickton of times throughout her canon and all cases have the same basic layout; she starts out very motivated (VERY motivated), often with unrealistic expectations for herself that she is very determined to meet, but after working hard for a while she will realize that they are unrealistic and stop trying. She says herself in one case that “I wouldn’t be able to do it anyway, so I gave up”. Giving up to Miyako means abandoning a task midway and not coming back to it. In her most extreme case of giving up, Miyako was about ready to hop a bus and leave Otowa city and give up on her life there.

A lot of Miyako’s traits thus far have been negative. Indeed, it’s no lie to say that she is a girl with a ton of pessimistic issues. However, you probably would not know this at first glance. In fact, even Miyako manages to keep herself oblivious to her own obvious problems. As mentioned, when Miyako gets on her happiness train it will just keep blazing down the tracks until she hits a bump and has to wonder what caused it. When Miyako is examing the bump on the tracks she will notice that she’s unmotivated, lazy, and lonely. But until then, she’s a very happy person. Miyako’s entire life has been full of bumps and she’s gotten very good at recovering from them and continuing through life without a care in the world.

She is a carefree person who seems to live for happiness. Characters comment on how “free” she is; able to skip classes as she pleases and feeling free to do what she wants. Miyako will freely give her honest opinions on anything, even if they sometimes seem cruel or disorganized, because she doesn’t feel the need to flower up her thoughts with manners. If something bores her then Miyako will avoid it, and if it’s a person boring her then she won’t hesitate to tell them that and then ditch them where they stand. When something has her curious then she asks about it without any regard for personal boundaries. Her interactions with people are often teasing and childish, with Miyako taking joking jabs at people, and she is constantly giving off a playful and happy aura.

In the end though, that’s just the sort of person that Miyako is. She’s difficult and even seems to know it. She’s pushy, she’s selfish, she’s a bit mean, and above all, she’s lonely. What Miyako wants is to be happy and she wants to be happy with other people. Her biggest problem is finding people to be happy with.

Adding on to the bit about Miyako being a happy person; She keeps herself very oblivious to her own problems and doesn't like to bring them up with other people. Throughout her canon she is a very spontaneous, energetic, and cheerful person who always keeps a bright smile on her face. Miyako is a girl with a mountain of personal issues and she's a girl who tucks every last issue away and tries to live life as normally as possibly. There is a scene where Miyako is in her house and leaving to go on a date that illustrates this; She calls "I'm going now!" to her empty house, even when she knows no one is going to respond, and she makes preparations of supper, even when she knows no one is going to eat with her. Miyako doesn't want to mope around.

But sometimes she can't help it. As stated, her happiness is always blazing down the tracks with no care in the world. Miyako feels nothing against dragging people to keep her company, she feels no shame in asking favors of strangers, and she doesn't feel bad about breaking a few rules and skipping class for her happiness. But occasionally she'll hit a bump, such as a point where she is stood up on a date in the anime. When there's a bump in Miyako's road then she stops to examine it and will realize how lonely she is. This is when Miyako's sadness begins to show; when she is alone, questioning how to fix her mood and be obnoxiously happy again.

Luckily, Miyako's been shown to have a very quick turn around point between happiness and sadness. She does not like to linger on those unhappy feelings and is quick to cover them up or just cry her eyes out to get over it as quickly as possible. Miyako says herself that she'd prefer not to think about serious things and instead prefers to be a goofball. She understands that when she thinks serious things she usually gets sad and doesn't want to do that. When a conversation starts getting too serious for her then she'll try to derail the serious tone with jokes.

Elaborating on her happiness again; Miyako is, 90% of the time, a really annoying type of person. Her classmates all comment on how "difficult" she is. Miyako is amazingly fickle with the way she acts on a whim; being on a happy date with Hirono one moment and then abandoning him mid-conversation the next. She is pushy, dragging "TsuTsun" to a coffee shop with her against his will and even ordering his drink before he looks at the menu. She also seems to love teasing and flirting; on the night they meet, Miyako tells Hirono "there's no one at my house tonight~" just to see him blush when he thinks perverted things. She likes to play around and goof off.

Being with people is how Miyako shows her happiness. However, she has a hard time being with them. She has a terrible fear of being forgotten, as a result of how her parents abandoned her, and is afraid of not being acknowledged. I’ve said that Miyako wants to be praised, or even punished, which is very true. This requires that she interacts with people. However, she feels like she’s been abandoned so many times in the past that it’s better to just not involve herself too deeply with other people. Miyako seeks temporary interactions and makes a point to forget the people involved before they forget her. This is evidenced in how one character approaches Miyako and says they were friends a year ago, but Miyako has since then decided to forget about him. She even says to Hirono at the end of the anime that she wants to leave him before she leaves her, because she’s just that scared of rejection.
So even though she can come off as being overly friendly with her pushiness, Miyako is very hesitant to actually make friends.

All of this is done while smiling; most key to her personality is that Miyako comes off as a super happy, though slightly annoying, person without a care in the world. She's so cheerful that you'd think her only issues were being selfish, pushy and fickle, until she told you about her secret issues.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
--- Unmotivated: Paired with the positive trait below, but Miyako is generally an unmotivated person. She has no plans or dreams for her future to look forward to so has no reason to try to accomplish great things. Miyako is content to skip classes and laze around with only a casual interest at best in her schoolwork.
+++ Potential to be Very Motivated: However, she does have to potential to be super motivated. Miyako has no personal motivation but will try hard for the sake of others. Not as in “she wants to help everyone” but because Miyako wants praise. If she feels like someone will pay attention to her as the result of doing a good job then Miyako will put all of her effort into the task at hand.
--- Acts on Whims: Miyako can lose interest in things very fast or quickly change her mind. One moment she’s screaming about how her very important purse has been stolen and even stealing a bicycle to chase the culprit... next thing you know, she’s on the swings talking about it wasn’t really important to her. This might be particular troublesome with a part time job, since Miyako might end up ditching her shifts or leaving a town early, only to have the Police come after her.
--- Calling it Quits: Her motivation ties in with how easily Miyako gives up. If she feels she cannot accomplish anything and that the reward from accomplishing it are not worth it then she will just shrug her shoulders and move on. It’s hard to get Miyako to see a task through because she runs away from it the very moment that it begins to get difficult.
+++ Cheerful: On the bright side, she is a very happy person and very good at staying happy. Characters comment on how quickly Miyako bounces back after she gets depressed. She’s lived on her own for so long that she’s gotten good at finding reasons to smile and finding ways to keep herself happy.
--- Selfish: She is also noteably selfish. Miyako’s thought process focuses on herself and no one else. This will begin to bend over time as she adjusts to having Pokemon but she probably won’t be a particularly nice trainer in the beginning.
+++ Independence: Miyako is very capable of taking care of herself. She has done so for most of her life. She can cook, clean, and manage money like an adult would, mostly because she did not have much of an adult presence in her childhood.
+++ Good Memory: Miyako mentions to Yuuko that she has a good memory, better than most people’s, which helps her get away with very little studying. Despite being notorious for her habit of skipping classes Miyako actually has some of the best grades in her school. When she sits down to do something, like study or take a test, she’ll do her best. The problem is getting her to sit down.
